Prominent grocer Horace Wooten engaged architect David Castle to construct the Paramount Theatre to complement his Wooten Hotel. The auditorium space was designed to re-create a Spanish courtyard at night, with projected clouds and twinkling stars. The Paramount opened to a sold-out house on May 19, 1930, and continued to operate as a first-run movie house until the mid-1970s.

The Paramount was saved from the wrecking ball by the Abilene Preservation League, who worked to get the building placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was restored in 1987 and renovated to accommodate live shows and is now home to a wide array of programming, including ballet, opera, live theatre, concerts and movies.
