The Iris opened on September 1, 1925 with the film "The Lady" starring Norma Talmadge. Admission was 15 cents and 25 cents. There was a contest to name the theater, in which the winner collected a $25 prize.

The theater was damaged by a fire and remodeled in late 1970. In 1985, the marquee fell off of the building during a storm.

Parts of the 1976 movie "Drive-In" were filmed here.

The theater closed in 2001 and part of the building converted to retail use. A local theater troupe performs here regularly.
