Information for this tour was contributed by John Szalkowski. Showplace 4 opened in the late spring of 1977. It was the first non-union movie theater to open in Amarillo, which caused a tremendous uproar. We had automated single-reel projection transports that didn't require reel change-overs (the Cinema Twin on Western was the only other one that had similar equipment, but using a platter system). The owners refused to pay union wages to a projectionist for basically doing "nothing". Select ushers at Showplace were trained to thread and start the projectors. The projectionists union picketed the theater for many months after the opening. Photos Photos remain the property of the Member and may not be reproduced without the written consent of the Member. |
