Opened in 1946 by Wayne Amusement Company, the State was remodeled in 1962, with colorful dragons painted on the auditorium walls. In the early 1980s, the theater was split into several auditoriums, a video arcade was added, and a program of second-run films was started. National Amusements purchased the theater and operated it until it closed in 1986. In 1990, the City of Wayne purchased the theater and extensively remodeled it at a reported cost of $500,000. The theater reopened in 1991 under an agreement with National that the State would not show films less than two years old. This agreement has since expired, and the theater continues to show current films.
