United Detroit Theaters opened the Woods on February 18, 1948, with the film Crossfire. The theater was twinned in 1969-70, closing off the balcony. It was later sold to Plitt Theaters and Nicholas George. In 1981, the upper level theater was split in two, and two years later the lower level theater was split into three. A few years later, the "gallery" was converted into a tiny theater. The theater was sold to AMC Theaters in 1986.
