The Orpheum opened on August 28, 1927. After being closed for nearly a year, John Hamrick reopened the theater as a movie house. During the 1940s and 1950s, the theater was home to the Seattle Symphony and then, in the early 1960s, the stage was bricked off from the rest of the house and the theater returned to motion pictures. Sterling purchased the theater in 1964. In June 1967, the building's contents were sold at auction and demolition began in August. It took more than ten weeks to demolish the building to make way for what is now the Westin Hotel.
