A third floor was added to the Plaza Hotel (1904) in 1929 and included an opera house. The property was sold in 1941, and the hotel was gutted and expanded to create the Plaza Theatre, which opened in March 1942.

The theater was reopened as a regional performing arts center in 1995, after sitting abandoned since the 1980s.
