Information for this tour was contributed by Joe Wisner. The Irving was built in 1913 and operated by the Idle Hour Amusement Company. In the 1970s, Steven Toushin, Paul Gonsky, and Jeff Begun purchased the building to show adult films.
In the early to mid 1980s, a man purchased the building and went to running B-run and independent films. There was a major renovation in the theater in 1987, and it was twinned in the very early 1990s.
He closed the theater around 1994, and it was sold out of bankruptcy in 1997, where that owner had intentions of turning it into a dining/bar movie house. Due to liquor license laws and old covenants on the deed, there's no way to sell alcohol in the building. So, after his getting half-way through gutting the building, it was sold and used for a mix of live entertainment -- music, theater, performing arts, and movies & films.
The building was again sold and the current owner has no immediate plans to reopen.
