Florence Wilson Singer opened the Martha Washington on October 21, 1915, and the colonial theater's first film was The Island of Regeneration. Singer made an exhibition agreement with First National in 1920 and Butterfield Theatres took over shortly afterward. Butterfield operated the theater until 1971. The theater was twinned as an adult theater and became the ART 1&2, by removing the M, H and A of the "Martha".
