The Mel was opened on January 29, 1942, by United Detroit Theatres. The first film at the $250,000 theater was "When Ladies Meet". In its later years, the Mel featured adult fare, and in 1988, the City of Melvindale shut down the theater for good. The theater was razed in June of that year and the property is now part of a shopping center.
